It’s hard to talk about Costa Rica without talking about the Arenal volcano. The Arenal volcano is a beautiful volcano still in operation and that visitors from Costa Rica can go to admire very closely.
The Arenal volcano is a magnificent conical-shaped volcano with a height of approximately 1633 meters (the height changes with volcanic activities of the volcano).
History of the Arenal volcano
After a sleep of about 400 years, it was on July 29th, 1968 in the morning that the Arenal volcano came into a great eruption. The very strong eruptions and volcanic activities then continued for several days, killing 87 people and disappearing by stones, lava and ashes, more than 15 square kilometres of Costa Rica’s land. In fact, it is mentioned that the revival of the Arenal volcano then caused damage to more than 230 square kilometres of land, properties and other elements surrounding the area of the volcano.
Today the activity of the Arenal volcano is relatively stable. In fact, the last major volcanic activity that took place at the Arenal volcano occurred on May 8, 1998. The ériuption was important enough to force the evacuation of the hotels in the area. Luckily, no one was hurt during this rash. Today the Arenal volcano is closely monitored by scientists. If you are staying at a hotel near the volcano, you may even notice signs indicating the direction to take in case of evacuation.
Arenal volcano – still in operation
So since this great eruption of 1968, the Arenal volcano has kept its level of volcanic activity fairly constant. We can now observe activities such as:
– Hear explosions followed by the appearance of a large mushroom-shaped ash cloud
-Hear large explosions followed by the descent of volcanic rocks
– but especially, seeing small lava flows down the volcano
Unless you’re unlucky and visit the Arenal volcano while it’s in the clouds, you should be able to see these phenomena.
